Do you need planning permission for a home office?

Since working from home was forced in 2020, workplaces have seen a continued rise in the number of people wishing to stay working from home. Although working from home is now seen as something ordinary, many are caught out when planning permission is needed.
Does a home office need planning permission?
Typically no. However, planning permission is needed when there is a significant increase in visitors, items are stored outside, there is an advertisement outside, or significant structural changes are needed.
Garden and shed offices
Whether you need planning permission for a garden office depends on the impact on your property and neighbours. Height, shade and privacy issues on neighbouring property must be considered.
Incidental use
To avoid planning permission, use of the space must be 'incidental'. Excessive business use is unlikely to be considered incidental.
