Do I need planning permission to make changes to my garden?

Open fields in Suffolk

With summer around the corner, many people are planning garden changes. While you won't need permission to plant flowers, bigger projects may require planning permission.

Permitted Development

Certain works are allowed under Permitted Development with strict requirements for height, size and location.

Fences and walls

Under Permitted Development, fences adjacent to highways must not exceed 1 metre; other fences must not exceed 2 metres.

Sheds and garden offices

Total outbuilding area must not exceed 50% of your garden space.

Decking

No planning permission needed if platforms are not more than 30cm from the ground.
